OT: Royal Wedding Mania
Millions of Americans will roll out of bed at an unholy hour to watch Prince William wed the glamorous babe he's shacked up with for 8 years, today a commoner and tomorrow the future Queen of the Tabloids England. All I can say is buckle up, Katie, it's going to be a bumpy ride from here on out.
Why should a nation that shot its way to independence from the Crown care about a big expensive PR-event for the monarchy? Well, it's a show and we love a show. And it's the latest installment of a 30-odd-year soap opera that started with Diana. I'm not a big Dianaphile at all and Charles doesn't rate that much better in my opinion, but William and Harry are okay in my book and I love the Queen.
I got up at 5 a.m. in 1981 and around that time in 1986 to watch previous royal weddings. But that's when I lived on the East Coast and I was off from school for summer. The thing that sucks about being on the West Coast is that the time difference is so great, "coverage" (i.e. two hours of meaningless chatter) starts locally at 1 a.m. and the ceremony gets going at 3. I have to work tomorrow :(. Is Westminster Abbey cheaper on weekdays or something? Why not have it on Saturday?
Oh well, I'll just watch it on YouTube at work anyway.
