That's an interesting tale, although I can recognize my reasons for finding it so... I suppose I was just a little too young to even hear of "Star Blazers" until years after the fact, but in the time between TESB and RotJ I did regularly go over to my friends next door to watch "Battle of the Planets," the other anime series that got brought across the Pacific to try and cash in on the Star Wars phenomenon... Given, though, that when I started watching Robotech a few years after that, the love triangle of its first part only registered on me in the most general of ways, I might not have picked up on much of the romance in Star Blazers either. Nowadays, things can be at times a bit different for me that way.
I did take the chance a little while back to see the original Japanese language version of Star Blazers, "Space Battleship Yamato" (where everyone has a Japanese name), but only saw around as much of it as you saw back then. I also picked up DVDs of the "Yamato movies"; now, I suppose I have an added reason for getting around to them one of these days...
