Celebration IV: Weather

Those of you who experienced the snow of Celebration III or the mudfest known as Celebration I don't need to worry. There's zero chance of snow in downtown L.A. and it's the dry season, so rain isn't likely (bring a small umbrella just in case). Temperatures run 75-85 and there has already been some hot days in SoCal, as evidenced by some recent wildfires (wildfires aren't likely to torch the downtown area, btw). Coastal CA has something known as a microclimate, where temperatures can vary quite a bit short distances away. This means it could be 70 by the ocean and 10 miles inland, it could be 90. Downtown isn't close to the shore so plan on it being warmer. The standard fannish uniform of jeans and t-shirts will work just fine if you are not costuming. Bringing a hoodie or light jacket for frigid convention halls and cool nights is a smart idea. If you wake up in the morning and see that it's gloomy and overcast outside, do not fret. It's the "marine layer," low clouds that come in from the ocean. Occasionally it sticks around all day but more often than not it clears up by midday with little to no rain.

Now, this isn't weather-related but it's something I'm sure is on the minds of many of you visiting CA...earthquakes. I cannot promise there will be no earthquakes since they are not predictable. But I can offer this perspective. More people have died this year from tornadoes than from earthquakes in the U.S. over the past 15 years. That includes the last big quake to hit SoCal, the Northridge quake in 1994. Hurricanes cause far more destruction. Big earthquakes can hit the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii, southeastern Missouri/western Tennessee, and even the Northeast...their number just hasn't come up yet.

Oh yeah...don't forget your sunglasses.

Yes, it's in Los Angeles. At this point, you'll have to buy at the door but I don't think it should be any problem aside from well, lines ;).

Good advice. I was wondering about these issues.
