Carbonite Nail Polish: The Hunt Is On!

I'm a nail polish junkie and will even drop $ on pricier brands. I've bought the hot Chanel colors and just last weekend, Nordstrom managed to suck money out my wallet thanks to Buy Two Get One Free offers for both Deborah Lippmann and Butter London nail polishes. I have enough bottles of OPI and Essie to open my own salon.

Then I catch wind of Revlon making a new shade called Carbonite. It's meant to be a knockoff of another must-have Chanel polish Graphite, but Revlon's version has two advantages: it's a heck of a lot cheaper and Chanel's version does not have an obviously Star Wars-inspired name. This is the first Star Wars themed nail polish since Yves Saint Laurent put out Naboo Pink as part of its Love 2000 line years ago. So of course I MUST have it.

Despite many blog posts claiming finds at Walgreens, CVS, etc., I tried local Wal-Marts, Targets, a Walgreens, and a CVS without success. I noticed that many have found it at Meijers, a chain that's mostly in the Midwest. Typical; flyover country gets it first ;).

Yves Saint Laurent put out Naboo Pink????! I wish I had known this. I mean, I work with my hands and thus don't wear nail polish. But that is cool.

I'd imagine Carbonite is silvery.

Yes. In late 1999, Yves Saint Laurent had for its Fall/Winter collection a temporary line called Love 2000 that sought to kill two birds in one promotional stone: Star Wars and the coming new millennium. It had among other awesomeness, nail polish called Naboo Pink that was very light pink with a little sparkle in it and a beautiful lipstick in Rouge Amidala, a Chinese red with a bit of a gold tone. There was other stuff that was part of the collection but since YSL's makeup is pricey and I was making a lot less money back then, I splurged only for those items. My brother even snagged for me a promotional booklet that was a hoot. There were tips on how to do your makeup just like Amidala's with their stuff!

What's even more amusing is that apparently, the makeup line was hard to find. I used to live in Northern Virginia, and the Tysons Corner Bloomingdales carried the entire line. I also found some of the items at a Sephora at another NoVA mall. The only other place I'd seen it for sale was at the Saks Fifth Avenue flagship store in New York City. Steve Sansweet couldn't believe it when I told him I'd found this stuff in an actual store. He had to get his set from a sales rep at YSL.

That is really cool that YSL did that. I wish I had known but I've never been that much into beauty products.

Wow!

Carbonite nail polish... LOL. I'm guessing gray/silver?

It's hard to go past the OPI counter, yes. :D

I'm gonna go try and find it! Considering I'm not that far from you I probably won't have any luck either, though...

Typical; flyover country gets it first ;).

See, this is why people think the coasts are snobby.

Otherwise, though: nail polish, yay!

Oh, I was just kidding.

Yeah. Is that supposed to make it better?

It's too easy, for all of us, to treat some groups as "fair game" for the butt of jokes. I've been on the receiving end of several "jokes" about my regional accent, for instance, that would have been completely inappropriate if they were directed at, say, an Filipino accent instead. But they're okay because this is "flyover" country? No, I don't think so. I get that you didn't intend to offend anyone - but if you had made a similar joke about, for instance, a racial minority ("Typical: the [group of your choice] get it first"), I don't think that would fly. It shouldn't, anyway. Why should this?

I promised myself I would start speaking up when I saw stuff like this, that really bothered me, instead of just fuming about it and decrying casual, socially-acceptable prejudices. So even though I know you didn't mean any offense, I kept my promise to myself and spoke up anyway. For whatever it's worth.

I couldn't find it at either Meijer or Kroger (another local grocery chain) yesterday. Hopefully it'll turn up eventually.

I so want this.
