Comics, Hot Topic, and "Trading Spouses"
Dec. 9th, 2004 09:10 pmIf you are looking to save yourself some money this holiday season, stay the hell away from your mall's Hot Topic. Especially if you are like me and you're a total 'ho for SW goodies. Hot Topic is aside from its Goth HQ reputation, a haven of fangirliness, especially if you like SW, LOTR, or HP. Lately they've cranked out a lot of stuff and I expect the avalanche to continue all the way through ROTS's release. During my last foray, I bought a track jacket with a stormtrooper helmet on the back. ('Tis very sharp.) My friend in Maryland told me that they now have shoelaces and some new t-shirts. Of course I had to investigate! Among the new shirts is one featuring the ROTS teaser poster, previously an exclusive at ShopStarWars.com. Actually, it's a little cheaper at HT than it is online. So I got that and the shoelaces. While at the store I saw they even had a cute little red and black baby outfit (they now sell baby clothes at HT for those teen moms) with a picture of Vader's helmet and the caption "Who's Your Daddy?" Too bad I don't have a sproglet.
Theeen, I used a 25% off coupon to get the Inside the Worlds of the Star Wars Trilogy book at Borders. I have the whole series; I needed to complete my set. I picked up Republic #71 at my comics shop. There's a brief A/P sort of shippy moment and Asajj Ventriss learns the hard way not to mess with Anakin's woman.
If you've never seen the show Trading Spouses on Fox (ABC's Wife Swap is a similar concept), it switches moms from two very different families and forces them to live with the other family for a week. Pain for them and hilarity for us ensues. Cases in points...a gator huntin' woman from the bayous of Louisiana switches with a self-righteous vegan from California or a pampered Texas white woman switches with a lower-middle class black woman. The producers of the show have been hunting around for a family of geeks, er SW/Trek fans, for a future episode. I'm sure some sucker will take them up on it but you just know they will in true MSM fashion make them and the rest of us look as freaky as possible. Just a warning to you SW fan moms out there. Don't fall for the "you'll get 50K" line either. The other family's mom determines how you'll spend it so don't expect it to fund your trip to Celebration III and SW Weekends at Disney World.
