Street Life II
Jan. 7th, 2005 01:54 pmRemember those guys in Seattle who started camping out for AOTC in January 2002? Well, one of them is back, plopped out in front of the Cinerama theater:

I remember this caused much head-shaking three years ago. I thought camping outside through the winter in Seattle (as opposed to Miami or Honolulu) was insane. I didn't appreciate how the whole spectacle kind of made all of us look like freaks, even though these guys were trying for a world record (which they got) and most of the campouts didn't start until much later. But, I thought, if that's what these guys want to do with their time, whatever.
Now I'm grouchy. First off, if this dude thought TPM and AOTC were a "mixed bag" why come back, other than the fact he's just another media 'ho? If you're going to pull off this sort of stunt, shouldn't you at least show a little more love for the PT? How about using the time in line to raise a little dough for charity, like most of the other organized campouts?
I know some of the people who camped out for both TPM and AOTC in Washington, D.C. and it's one SW tradition I think I can skip. People at the TPM campout endured getting pelted with eggs and witnessing rats running around on the streets, along with the relentless media coverage. The AOTC group had some of their stuff stolen, endured morning show jock insults, and since I got to see them the morning AOTC opened at the Uptown, they were a little, er, raw. They got great t-shirts from Starbucks though, made expressly for the line. Not to mention the free coffee.
The local line starts in late April; the D.C. one starts in May.
