Some musings
Jun. 2nd, 2005 07:48 pmIt's three weeks into ROTS's release, it's making crazy amounts of money, and there just isn't a lot of anger or backlashing at the movie. Oh sure, some haters are out there and instead of racism allegations it's a few knee-jerk types alleging partisan bias, but it's not as it was with TPM or with AOTC. Color me relieved. This doesn't mean it will win boatloads of Oscars or anything like that, but it probably won't get any Razzies either. This is the prequel that's cool to like but of course I love 'em all.
I still dared to peek though the cesspool that is TFN's ROTS board...I read through a debate on whether Padmé is a good role model for girls. Let me say off the bat that wives and mothers almost never get any respect in fandoms because fans seldom want a heroine who's too adult and too much like their mommies in real life. Some of these people expected Padmé to be doing preggers fu, and while it might be amusing, it's also not realistic. Whether her actions make her a good example...weeeell, nobody wants a daughter to fall in love with a Sith Lord and keel over because she is as attached to him as he is to her (though I would argue she is also deeply attached to an era that is passing). Yet, Padmé still is in many other ways a heroic and admirable character. Her good qualities are passed down to Luke and to Leia. The difference between Padmé and Leia is that Padmé is also a tragic figure and as such, she must be flawed and/or suffers because of someone else's flaws. If the PT characters didn't have problems or issues, there would be no need for the OT characters, would there?
I have yet to take advantage of Hyperspace's blogs, though it's hard to figure what I'd do with it since I have good ol' LJ. But read Pablo Hidalgo's entries...they're good. He's done some mythbusting with some of the things that have appeared in the press, including so-called gaffes in ROTS.
