C'est fini for the awards season…the MTV Movie Awards show marks the end of the line for handing out trophies to ROTS or any SW film for that matter (lifetime achievements and so forth excepted). Hayden looked a lot happier Saturday night than he has at some of his more recent appearances but I guess finally getting a little pat on the back would cheer up anybody. I do not have a full transcript of exactly what he said during his acceptance speech. You'll have to tune in Thursday night to hear it. But I have heard that he thanked Papa George for letting him "play such a cool character." Aww, that's why we love him 'round here!

In any case, ROTS fared slightly better than its predecessors in the trophy count. It won two People's Choice Awards, which is better than the goose eggs TPM and the not-even-nominated AOTC received. It won more Saturns than its predecessors. It also picked up a couple of newish awards from the Hollywood Film Festival and something called the Golden Satellites. But ROTS won one MTV Movie Award as did AOTC and TPM. The Golden Globules blew them off completely and while the Oscars doled a couple of technical nominations, ROTS didn't win anything there either.

What can you take from all of this? The film industry as a whole has a love/hate attitude toward SW. Like I said before, no matter how much money these films make or how much excitement they generate or how the industry has borrowed a lot from them, there's always something else around at the time "better" or somehow more deserving. This goes back to TESB or possibly even to the 1978 Academy Awards when ANH swept the technical and craft awards but not any of the marquee ones. Is it jealousy? Is it lazy campaigning from Fox and Lucasfilm? Is it because SW was never quite a Hollywood studio baby? All of the above? It would be interesting to really dig the dirt on the whys and hows.

It bears noting that ROTS fared best with awards the public got to vote on: the Hollywood Movie Awards, People's Choice, and the Best Villain category (methinks Baby Brangelina caused a little fudging for the Best Fight category). It's nice to see fans stand by the film.
