So, what's been going on?
Oct. 5th, 2006 06:23 pmOkay, so not a heck of a lot has been going on lately with SW. I'm reading "Darth Bane: Path of Destruction" and I'm looking out for new toys that have yet to show up on shelves. Del Rey has at last got its Give Jacen A Sith Name Contest up and running. No word on whether there will be a dead pool on who Jacen will kill or who will kill Jacen eventually. Unless he too strides through the Revolving Door of the Dark Side. Anyway, I already voted for Darth Emo ;). Go here: http://www.darthwho.com to enter in your own idea.
Speaking of Darths, I read about this interesting little nuance in ROTS. The following was posted on some site or other (and secondarily on a list): I was in my local Walmart today and they had eps 3 on the HD tv screens..I walked in when Padme had the twins..and since the place was so quiet early in the am you could hear it all over..gave me chills..but even watching at the end..and I did notice something I really hadn't before when Sidious told Vader his wife was dead and he claimed she couldn't be..when the room started to shake..you could hear a faint sound of Vader crying..in the suit. his trembled voice in short breaths in the sound of someone in servere emotional pain.
Another person on the list replied: As to the specific comment about Vader crying - absolutely right you do hear him crying at that point - it bugged me when I saw ROTS at an ordinary Cinema and when I played my ROTS DVD that I could no longer hear that sound element. I began to wonder if I'd dreamed that. Glad to hear that someone else thinks the same. (She saw the film with digital sound and projection at the Odeon theater in London.)
Now HD can pick up all kinds of stuff that would get muffled or drowned out on other systems. Someone at work today talked about seeing part of Gladiator on a HD t.v. at a store and she said you could hear the crunching of the sand during the Coliseum battles. So if you have a HD t.v. and you have Cinemax you might be able to pick up on all kinds of cool stuff next month!
Is LFL getting out of the movie business? And why are tentpole franchises a waste of time?

Here's my .02…I've been saying for a while that $200 million budgets and $20 million star paychecks are about to become things of the past. Superman Returns found itself in trouble almost from the get go because of its bloated budget. Blockbusters can't rely on a single actor or actress to bring home the bacon, unless he answers to "Johnny Depp." Even so, budget conscious studios aren't going toss money at stars the way they did in the 1990s. Especially since there's a growing number of big names who are willing to work for relatively cheap in small, low-budget but prestige-building movies.
Here are related stories on the Clone Wars cartoon series. These news items say maybe next year, but until I hear something official it's still 2008:
