Star Wars TV: Jar Jar Is The Star
Producer Rick McCallum has revealed that the star of the upcoming live action Star Wars television is none other than Jar Jar Binks.
"Yes, it's true," McCallum said. "As you know, Jar Jar survived the prequel trilogy. George got around to thinking, 'What would have happened to him in those years after the trilogy?' And that became the genesis of this new program."
Reassuring easily-angered Star Wars fans, McCallum says that this won't be your kids' Jar Jar. "This is going to be a very different Jar Jar, a grown up Jar Jar.
"After the deaths of his friends, the destruction of the Jedi, and the rise of the Empire in Episode III, Jar Jar realizes that the galaxy takes a [poop] on heroes. He becomes bitter and cynical. He makes a living as a smugger, loyal to nothing more than making his next credit. This Jar Jar drinks, smokes, uses death sticks, swears, and cavorts with prostitutes." In fact, Ahmed Best will only voice Jar Jar in flashbacks.
"We're going to hire a new actor to voice Jar Jar for much of the series," McCallum said. "Fiddy (rapper 50 Cent) has shown interest in the part but no one has been signed yet."
In other interviews, McCallum has described the show as darker and grittier than the Star Wars films, comparing it to HBO's defunct "Deadwood." "I'm happy to tell you we've hired some writers from 'Deadwood' and from FX's 'Nip And Tuck,'" McCallum said. "They handle profanity really well. It's going to be [freakin'] awesome."
But there will also be the hope and idealism found in all of the Star Wars films. "Jar Jar will befriend a beautiful young female Jedi who's part of the fledgling Rebellion. She will try to get Jar Jar to believe in the goodness of the galaxy again." When asked if this new Jedi has a name yet, McCallum revealed the name is Ma'Ri Soo. "She will have long raven hair and violet eyes." This character has yet to be cast.
