lazypadawan: (Obi-Wan)
A Knighting
Starring: Obi-Wan and the Jedi Council
Time period: TPM
Rated: G

Obi-Wan knelt on the elaborate marble floor, gazing at its intricate designs as sunlight faded through the palace's large windows. Suddenly he heard the humming of several lightsabers, their blades reflecting on the polished floor.

Several members of the Jedi Council had come to Naboo after the Trade Federation's defeat. They wanted to investigate Qui-Gon's death, specifically the mystery of the Sith that killed him. Since it was decided that Obi-Wan's defeat of this Sith merited passing the trials, they'd agreed to confer upon him full knighthood. Since the necessary quorum was met on Naboo, the Council chose to knight Obi-Wan before Qui-Gon's funeral. It is what the fallen Master would have wanted.

Only hours beforehand, Obi-Wan had learned from Yoda that he was to train Anakin Skywalker. So much had happened to him so quickly, he felt as though he'd aged a decade in only a day. Qui-Gon and most of the Council--Yoda being the exception--felt he was ready to train a boy who may be the Chosen One of prophecy. They were all experienced and wise, so far be it from Obi-Wan to question their judgment, although Obi-Wan was prepared to follow Qui-Gon's wishes no matter what.

But am I experienced and wise enough? he wondered as Yoda walked forward with his lightsaber.

Master, I wish you were here.

Yoda swept his lightsaber forward and within a blink of an eye, sliced off Obi-Wan's padawan braid. Usually, the padawan's Master removed the lock of hair at the back of the head. But since Qui-Gon could not carry out that duty, Yoda also removed the lock.

"Rise, Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi," Yoda said. Obi-Wan rose to his feet, his expression solemn. He bowed his head before the Masters.

"Go forth and serve the Force," Mace Windu intoned.

Obi-Wan filed into the viewing room along with the other mourners. There his beloved Master lay in state, his body wrapped in a shroud. Obi-Wan still carried Qui-Gon's lightsaber on his belt. Soon he will re-build his own to replace the one lost in the battle with the Sith, but Qui-Gon's lightsaber will be a cherished memento. As Obi-Wan reached the bier where the body lay, he removed from a pouch on his belt the lock of hair cut from the back of his head. He tucked the lock of hair into the folds of the shroud, a final gift of gratitude to the man who had guided him to knighthood.
