I read on
a_blue_moon_cat's LJ that the professor emeritus of fandom, Forrest "Forry" J. Ackerman, has passed away at the age of 92.
Before Steve Sansweet, Gus Lopez, Philip Wise, or any other super collector, Ackerman had amassed hundreds of thousands of sci-fi and horror memorabilia. He had them on display in his "Ackermansion" in L.A. for several years; interestingly enough Sansweet once lived literally uphill from Ackerman. Decades before the first Trek fan put on Spock ears, he was among the first to costume at a sf event.
Of course, that's not all he'd done. He was a science fiction writer, a literary agent, an editor, and a publisher. He published what is possibly the first sf fanzine, but his best-known publication is
Famous Monsters of Filmland, sort of a precursor to mags like
Starlog or
Fangoria. It was one of the first magazines to cover a little space opera called Star Wars. He created the comic book character Vampirella.
Simply put, he was the world's first professional fan, a Renaissance man of geekdom. You may not have ever heard of him but none of us would have the lifestyles we live without him. You can read all about his very colorful life listed here:
