OT: The 500 Best Singles of the Decade?
Sep. 10th, 2009 07:43 pmPitchfork.com, which is entirely staffed by the kind of musical snob hipsters I worked with during my college radio years, put out a massive list of the 500 best singles (i.e. "songs") 2000-2009. As I expected, a lot of it was from acts I had never heard of. Up until I read this list, I had no idea 4AD and Rough Trade were still in business. Instead of feeling old I feel justified in the fact much of the bands the '80s music snobs liked have long since drifted into obscurity and irrelevance. Just as 99% of the obscurities Pitchfork put on its list. Heh heh. Strangely enough, they were mixed in with the likes of Britney Spears's "Toxic," the collected works of Justin Timberlake (though I'd give his production teams like Neptunes and Timbaland all of the credit), and Kelis's "Milkshake." Now, if there was a So Bad It's Good List, "Milkshake" would crack the top five. Otherwise, WTF? There was plenty of (c)rap, but virtually no country. Come on, you have to put Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats" on there and I hate country music.
Nevertheless, I was surprised to find several songs on Pitchfork's list that I would put on mine: Weezer's "Island In The Sun," three songs from The White Stripes, The Killers' "Mr. Brightside," Gorillaz's "Feel Good Inc.," The Postal Service's "Such Great Heights," Modest Mouse's "Float On," M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes," Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out," Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl," Daft Punk's "One More Time," Feist's "1234," Junior Senior's "Move Your Feet," Estelle's "American Boy," Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" and "Love At First Sight," Nine Inch Nails' "The Hand That Feeds," and Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" among others. In other cases, they picked artists I would include but with different tracks, like MGMT, Royksopp, Coldplay, Amy Winehouse, Ryan Adams, and the Chemical Brothers.
Hey, maybe I'll do my own list with a more manageable number of tracks, not like 500 or something.
