The Only Reasons Why I'm Going to CV
Dec. 10th, 2009 08:56 pmWell, bought my tix. They should be mailed out about a month prior to Celebration V. We'll see if it does any better than GenCon did with those tickets for Celebration IV, where a bunch of attendees who pre-paid long in advance either got their passes at the last minute or had to pick them up at the convention center. But I already give credit for an easy registration process and the ability to pre-order a convention program ($15).
I've already got a hotel too with a few friends. I'm staying at the luxurious EconoLodge Inn & Suites for $35 a night. Yep, 35 dolla on Hotels.com. One great thing about Orlando is that you can find hotels galore at a variety of price ranges. It says it's 3/4 of a mile from the convention center and near Universal and Sea World, so heck we could walk to the con if we wanted to. But since my friends are driving down from Maryland, we'll have a car ;).
All of that said, I have to admit I wasn't as excited about going to this shindig as I was to go to Celebration II way back in 2002 or even IV a couple of years ago. There were times when I thought about bailing on the next Celebration. Why? To be blunt, other SW fans/general geekdom drive me up the wall. Now, regular folks I don't mind. They have fun at events like Star Wars Weekends. But when I thought of attending another Celebration, or any event where you're going to have a bunch of geeks together and SW is the topic, I started to feel like I was going to spend Thanksgiving with a bunch of relatives who annoy me. This feeling has been gnawing me in the gut for about, oh, 10 years now. Well, maybe a little bit earlier than that. Looking back at my Celebration IV report, it did seem like I had a lot of fun and I guess I did, except for getting sick at the end of it. But there was something I didn't write about that nagged at me waaay at the back of my mind. There seemed to be an undercurrent of anger. Anger at the franchise, anger at Lucas, anger at the PT. Plus the blatant fanboy kowtowing to this kind of sentiment. And I worry that CV will be more of the same. Who wants to bet they'll invite all of your favorite famous PT haters to attend this thing and the stinky basement-dwelling slobs will rah-rah every time somebody rips on how bad they were? It's already not a good sign IMO when this is all about the 30th anniversary of TESB but they kinda forgot it's also the 5th anniversary of ROTS. If I had boatloads of money, a lot more charisma, and no fear of Lucasfilm's legal department, I would put on a con to celebrate the PT. It would be a gathering of kindred spirits, not a bunch of see-and-be-seen doofi who haven't had a kind thing to say about SW since 1995.
So, you may ask, why are you going anyway o cantankerous one? I'll tell you.
1. To see friends I haven't seen since 2007. Seriously, the first thing I've thought of when the announcement came down was thoughts of introducing everybody to Sonny's Real Pit Bar-B-Cue and field trips to Intergalactic Trading Company.
2. Out of loyalty to SW itself. I hope there's more about celebrating the movies and CW this time than the last.
