lazypadawan: (paradequeen)
So I got bit by a plot bunny thanks to a card in the new Star Wars Galaxy 5 set from Topps and here's the result:

Coronation
by lazypadawan
Starring: Padmé and various Naboo residents
Rated: G for absolutely nothing offensive

Everything Padme Naberrie had worked for her entire young life culminated in this moment.

She sat upon an embroidered ottoman like many before her, a humble seat for a soon-to-be crowned queen, within the cavernous throne room of the ancient Theed palace.  She wore her rich red embroidered gown, trimmed with shed fur and accented with lights around the hem of the skirt.  Her face was already painted white, dark red applied to her upper lip and the scar of rememberance on her lower lip.  The same scarlet accented each cheek.  Her hair was tightly pulled back.  She didn't feel like Padme, the teenage girl from an obscure mountain village who had risen so quickly through Naboo's meritocracy. She was no longer just Ruwee and Jobal's little girl or Sola's baby sister.

She was the incarnate of the goddess Ianna.  In moments, she would be queen and leader of her planet.

Padme ignored the hover cams filming her, carrying the moment live for all to see from all over the system. Her rival turned closest advisor Sio Bibble stood nearby as did Senator Palpatine, Naboo's representative to the Republic.  Her new handmaidens, the young women selected to be her ladies-in-waiting and protectors, stood solemnly.  A detachment of Royal Palace guards stood far off at the entryways and next to the ceremony.  Top officials from the Theed government and from the planetary government, along with those appointed advisors, sat in rows of chairs across from Padme.  She tried not to think about the fact they were all older than her parents.

The family was there too, undoubtedly looking upon her with pride and a touch of sadness.  Padme once again felt the pang of losing her grandmother Winama, who had been a source of strength and support over the years.  One of the last things Winama had told her, shortly before she became Princess of Theed just two years ago, was that fate had chosen her to be in the right place at the right time.

"Did it really?"  she thought as the holy man finished his blessings and moved to his seat in the audience.  Padme swallowed.  Now was the time as one of the handmaidens moved forward with the ceremonial headdress in her hands.  She gazed forward, something in her gut telling her that storm clouds lay ahead on the horizon, that she would be tested in ways no monarch had ever been in her world's history.  But it was too late to back out or flee.  The handmaiden stood over her and lowered the headdress onto her head.

Oh it was heavy.  The coronation complete, she was now Queen Amidala and her people were expecting her to rise to her feet.  She worried that the headdress's weight would make standing awkward, maybe even impossible.  But if she couldn't even bear this ceremonial burden, how could she prove she could bear the burden of statecraft?  Taking a deep breath, she steadily rose to her feet.  The chamber broke into applause.  Amidala could not smile, not even at this first accomplishment in office.  A queen had to be serene and solemn.  She was led out of the chamber to go address the massive crowds waiting in Theed's largest square.
