Clone Wars Debriefing: "Evil Plans"
Nov. 6th, 2010 01:19 pm"Evil Plans" once again laughs at the whole concept of a linear storyline, since it takes place after "Assassins" and Season Two opener "Holocron Heist" and before Season One's popular "Hostage Crisis." Cad Bane has been hired by the Hutts to get a layout of the Senate building.
Enter Artoo and Threepio, voiced once again by Anthony Daniels. Padmé is putting on an important party at her "pad" (heh heh) and freaks when a special cake lacks a certain fruit. Anakin, knowing there's no post-party sugar if Mama's not happy, sends the droids out to go buy it. Apparently there are no Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Safeways, Piggly Wigglys, Publixes, Giants, Dean & Delucas, Costcos, or Bristol Farmses on Coruscant, because the droids head to some shady markets in the ghetto to find this fruit. Artoo is lured into a droid spa while Threepio is abducted by Bane's henchmen and henchdroids. Threepio is tortured and after a while, Bane figures he needs Artoo as well. So Artoo is cornered and surrenders, and he's taken back and tortured. Bane gets all of the info he needs from their harddrives, and then their memories of the incident are wiped. They make it back with the fruit though in time to save the party! Meanwhile, Bane--shown briefly without his signature hat--returns to Tatooine with the Senate building plans and gets a new job...bust Ziro out of the big house, because Ziro has too many secrets.
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, mostly for Artoo and Threepio. It just feels like you're back in a Star Wars movie with them around. The scene in the droid spa was adorable. It's just the kind of charming thing you'd see in an actual Star Wars film, even if half of fanboy nation wouldn't admit it. Artoo was having so much fun, he didn't even notice that Threepio was missing, heh heh. Adding to the humor was Seth Green's return as Todo 360, who apparently has been rebuilt since his "demise" in "Holocron Heist."
Balancing out the humor are several moments of good old fashioned droid torture. Cad Bane is one heartless bastard, going as far as to torture characters beloved by millions of small children. One of the strengths of Clone Wars is that when it counts, it doesn't pull any punches.
Even though they are brief, I enjoyed the moments with Anakin and Padmé. I can easily see Padmé fretting over small details for an important event, having to choose ice sculptures, choosing outfits, and so forth. I just love that Padmé has her wardrobe in holographic form ;). Somewhere, Rachel Zoe is saying, "Dammit, why haven't they invented that yet?" Kudos to the animation staff for remembering how Padmé changes more often than Diana Ross on a world tour. Meanwhile, Anakin just wants everything to go right for her. It's such a normal old-marrieds moment, it was heartwarming.
The animation as per usual rocks. Coruscant's underground and urban landscape looked amazing as did Jabba's palace on Tatooine.
A funny inside tidbit is that the cake droid is voiced by Duff Goldman, the star of Food Network's "Ace Of Cakes" and a huge Star Wars fan.
Next week: QUINLAN EFFIN' VOS!!1!
