i agree about season 2 - it frankly sucked. nothing happened, and while they introduced interesting new characters, they also killed them off. i don't care about Jack's backstory at all. Kate and Sawyer are starting to get old too.
season 3 is tanking because the first half was almost all about Jack/Kate/Sawyer (wait.. they killed Eko, an interesting character) and could have been condensed into half as much space. they might be able to turn it around with the second half of this season, but frankly they might have lost too much ground already. last week's episode about Desmond was good, and the announcement that Charlie's supposed to die sets up some interesting stuff.
Lost was hot one day and not the next, because the quality definitely changed. season 1 was good, - season 2 was weak. season 3... weak start.. we'll see where it goes. perhaps they should focus more on the mystery of the island and not the mystery of the Others.
