As for me, I didn't notice the "ring" missing myself (although I might have had a thought or two about how "Luke wasn't there"), but I might have been distracted right then by how the destruction now shows the planet shattering into chunks instead of the matte painting being instantly replaced by the explosion. I suppose we all pick up on different things.
