I posted a response to the quote below on chibisophia's journal. I thought it would make for a neat post:
"One rather unique thing about the SW fandom is that it's very competitive. If any other fandom wins ANYTHING, it's looked upon as a failure for SW."
Absolutely. The reason is that SW--unlike 99.9% of fandoms out there--was phenomenally popular from day one. It's not a cult t.v. show or movie that built up a following over time. This started as the biggest box office hit of all time, the film that changed Hollywood forever, and a pop culture phenomenon. Some folks think SW never deserved its popularity, others think Lucas has to reinvent the wheel and top himself every single time for SW to remain "relevant" or "competitive." I admit, I love to see my team win and I'm just as annoyed as the next SW geek that the Oscars honored LOTR but not the SW films. But by no means do I view it as a failure on SW part if something else makes more money or wins more statuettes. Giving out awards is subjective and almost never fair. "Spiderman" might have made more money than AOTC, but AOTC was still a huge hit in its own right...the fifth film in a series going back 25+ years. No other series has accomplished that, not even the venerable James Bond films.
