My Evil April Fool's Prank
Apr. 1st, 2004 07:37 pmI posted the following on one Hayden YahooGroup, the Anakin Skywalker homepage's message board, and the A/P Defenders' thread at TFN. It's my little April Fool's prank for this year. (Last year, my prank was posting a bogus news story about Hayden looking for love on the next "The Bachelor.")
“’Star Wars’ Star to Bare All In Controversial Sex Play”
by Abril Tonta
When the shocking sex comedy “Knickers Off!” opens on Broadway this autumn, theatergoers will have the opportunity to see Hayden Christensen’s, um, lightsaber up close and personal.
The star of the critically-acclaimed “Shattered Glass” and next year’s “Star Wars: Episode III”, who turns 23 this month, has just signed on for a six-week run and his role includes full-frontal nudity. In fact, “Knickers Off!” features more nudity than any other play in modern stage history.
“Knickers Off!” was originally written and produced by Edmund Tusshe-Hynde for the London stage during the swinging ‘70s. The play is so risqué it has been banned in 14 countries. The New York production will prohibit admission to anyone under 18.
“This show is most certainly not for children,” said producer Elliott Weintraub. “It makes ‘Oh Calcutta!’ or ‘Hair’ look like ‘Cats.’”
The sex farce was originally set in the fictitious British seaside town of Bladderpool, but the locale was changed to the Hamptons on Long Island for the Broadway version. The story focuses on the carnal adventures of a wealthy group of friends.
Christensen plays the handsome young pool boy who pursues an older woman, rumored to be played by Kathleen Turner. He attempts at one point to seduce the older woman, Mrs. Robeson, dressed in nothing but a towel around his waist. “It’s a twist on the whole Mrs. Robinson thing in ‘The Graduate,’” Weintraub explained. “He drops the towel after doing a seductive strip tease.”
This role is a departure for an actor who had been so shy about nudity he wore flesh-colored pants for a shower scene in 2001’s “Life As A House.” What changed his mind?
“I wasn’t sure if I could, you know, handle all of the nudity,” he said. “So I called (‘Star Wars’ co-star) Ewan (McGregor) to see what he thought. He is a bit of an expert in the field. He told me, ‘My God, they wouldn’t have to pay me to be in ‘Knickers Off!’, I’d pay them!’ When I mentioned my apprehensions doing the seduction scene, he said, ‘Oh, bollocks! Go out there and be a man!’ I took his words to heart.”
Apparently, Christensen’s admirers have discovered by word of mouth the actor’s nude scene. “We have been barraged by phone calls from women who want to buy advance tickets,” Weintraub said. “They all want to know where they’ll get the best view.”
But only one thing still fazes the young star. “I sure hope they don’t have the air conditioning on too high,” he said.
“Knickers Off!” opens September 30 at the Music Box Theater near Times Square. Advance tickets will go on sale this summer.
