My mom had to fly out of the country this morning just as DHS instituted its no-liquids rule. I have no idea yet if she made it all the way there without all of her beauty products being seized or tossed out. But this latest air travel inconvenience pales next to the idea we were thisclose to another catastrophic attack. Great work on the part of British intelligence and law enforcement.

Okay, back to fannish stuff. There were some complaints on the starwars.com blogs about the latest issue of the Insider, which I finished reading through today. On the one hand, I think fans have to be realistic. There will be no further production news about upcoming movies, which took up a considerable amount of ink for the past several years. There will be production news about the television shows and a possible 3D re-release but not for at least another year or longer. Be grateful if the fan club doesn't decide to make the Insider a quarterly again, like it was 10 years ago.

On the other hand, I think the fan club has an obligation to make sure the Insider stays a SW publication. That's why we bother reading it. If the Insider starts running non-SW material (Indiana Jones being an acceptable exception), it's not a SW mag anymore, it's just like Starlog or Sci Fi or Entertainment Weakly or Premiere or any one of a zillion other entertainment/movie magazines. I'm sure some people found the ILM article interesting but frankly, it's just like running an article on Ewan McGregor's upcoming movies or Natalie Portman's pixie haircut. It's tangental to SW but it ain't SW.

Part of the issue is that Lucasfilm is saving a lot of its good content, including rare vintage stuff, for the official site. Granted some of it, like the recent run on some old educational film strips, can only be enjoyed on a website. But I think a lot of fandom-focused stuff, like for instance, an article on the making of a fan film or suggestions on how to customize dolls or action figures, could fill up pages.

The official site has noted that ROTS picked up a couple more trophies, this time for its DVD:
