Random stuff XIV
Feb. 7th, 2007 08:01 pmAs I might have mentioned before, The Senator Theatre in Baltimore, MD was a great place to catch a flick. It's a big, old-fashioned single screen theater in the heart of Charm City and is one of town's favorite landmarks. It's one of the few independently-owned movie theaters left in the country and the place definitely has a mom-and-pop feel to it. The owners are SW fans. In 1997, they had a mini event for the Special Editions and for the prequels, they made up their own cool posters, special commemorative tickets, and t-shirts. (I have an AOTC one and tried in vain to get a ROTS shirt.) They even had in the lobby exhibits of SW stuff from local collectors. Even though it's on an historical registry, the theater is in trouble:
I heard a news report last night that the bank is about to foreclose on The Senator Theatre. The manager
said he owes $93,000.00 and cannot pay. He believes it will be auctioned off and closed. It is an absolute shame that these wonderful places are biting the dust. I pray it does not happen to the Uptown. I would fight tooth and nail against it. We should lend our support to these historic places as much as we can. The manager said they will have to take him out on a stretcher.
I am bummed to hear this. Unfortunately with fewer people going to the movies as often and high costs without corporate support, it's especially tough on places like The Senator. Here's their web site:

My Defense of Naboo 12" set arrived yesterday in great shape. The eBay seller packed it with about 10 lbs of packing peanuts and bubble wrap. Now it has a good, loving home ;).
I also ordered from Amazon Marketplace a used copy of some book about SW and popular culture. I'll let you know what I think after I'm doing reading it, but flipping through it, I know I will have LOTS to say ;).
