A Tribute To SW's One Hit Wonders
Mar. 6th, 2008 06:56 pmThe sprawling SW saga has its main players whose actions and choices greatly affect the galaxy, for good or ill.
But along the way we encounter scores of characters who get their one moment of glory, then they are never seen again. The Imperial Trilogy has the customers of the Mos Eisley cantina, Porkins, Biggs, Gold Leader, General Dodonna, the Wampa, tauntauns, Dack, Ozzel, Needa, Lobot, IG-88, Zuckuss, Dengar, the Ewoks, the denizens of Jabba the Hutt's court, the Sarlacc, the Rancor, Admiral Ackbar, General Madine, Oola, Max Rebo, and Nien Nunb, among others. The Republic Trilogy gave us a changing lineup of handmaidens, Kitster, Sebulba, Supreme Chancellor Valorum, Qui-Gon Jinn, Darth Maul, Yaddle, Yarael Poof, Ric Olié, Captain Panaka, Jango Fett, Zam Wessell, Queen Jamillia, Taun We, that old priest who officiates at Anakin and Padmé's wedding, various clone commanders played by the same guy, the nexu, General Grievous, those guys on Utapau, the Boga, Tarfful, the Polis Massa crew, Queen Breha, Queen Apailana, etc.. Some appear for a scene or two, others make a big memorable splash. But due to many factors, such as death or the saga running out of movies, one SW outing is all they get. Some like Mon Mothma sort of made it to two movies, but Mothma's blazing return to the big screen was relegated to DVD outtake status.
Sometimes, being a one-movie wonder can elevate your cult/cool status. Lobot, for example. Or you get to do enough cool stuff in your one film that everybody remembers you, i.e. Jango Fett or General Grievous. But for the most part, you become an obscure action figure highly-prized by uberfans who know enough about SW to remember who you were or you become a trivia question only people like you or me can answer ;).
But it's all good. Most of us would trade our hand several times over just for the chance to appear in even one SW movie. These characters all got to live the galactic dream. So what if you don't blow up like Boba Fett? So what if you don't get to survive the movie? You got to make your mark and that's what counts.
So here's to you, False Wedge, General Rieekan, Salacious Crumb, Sabé, Dormé, and Commander Cody. What would guys like Obi-Wan and Luke do without you hanging around in the background or taking the bullet for them? There's no saga without you.
