On The Bookshelf: "Star Wars Art: Comics"
Dec. 1st, 2011 06:37 pmLast year's coffee table offering "Star Wars Visions" had a lot of very cool and unique pieces. It's a great book and absolutely worth buying.
Because that was a success, the same publishers decided to continue the series by focusing on comics art. Now I like Star Wars comics and some of the best art ever done for the series came out of the Dark Horse stable. As a retrospective of 34 years' worth of comics art, this book does the job. Mixed in with both story and cover art from Marvel and Dark Horse are new comics-style pieces by various artists. Some of them are pretty spectacular.
All of the eras are pretty well-represented, and since Dark Horse has had the license longer than anyone (over 20 years at this point), there's a good chunk of comics-based expanded universe stuff.
However, since it is mostly art we've already seen as opposed to the entirely-original art seen in "Visions," it's a few notches below its predecessor. I'd recommend getting it at a discount from Amazon instead of paying full fare for it or wait for a paperback edition.
