Papa George drops some info on SW t.v.

Yesterday, I went for a little while to a very small local con, the smallest one I've been to in years. I wanted to see what it was all about and well, it was pretty much like every small non-fandom-specific con I've ever been to: a gathering of book-reading, cat-lovin', costume-wearin', left-of-center people ;). The dealer's room was small but it had a few book dealers, a couple of ladies selling jewelry, a magick supply table, a dealer with nothing but Harry Potter stuff, a couple of costume suppliers, and somebody selling sf/gothic toys. It was at this booth that I heard a little girl excitedly snag a Dr. Who Dalek action figure. You KNOW she's the only kid in her class who even knows what a Dalek is ;). I didn't find anything I really wanted in the dealer's room but I did find something cool in the art room. One artist had on display a few SW pictures, including a really cool one of Obi-Wan in his prequel and OT years. You could bid on the art or "buy it now" if no one has bid on it for X price. So I thought, what the heck, and bought the piece. Had to bring it to an appreciative home ;).
Anyway, on to SW t.v.. There are a few reports about Lucas commenting on both the animated and live action t.v. shows over the weekend. It seems like the movie main characters are not necessarily going to be the focus of the new CW cartoon. Or something. I think.

They're also getting ready to issue those Young Indiana Jones shows on DVD, finally.

Date: 2007-03-05 06:06 pm (UTC)glad to see you at the con. whitney pointed out to me another staple of these cons: the fat, bearded middle-aged white guy who thinks what he has to say to panelists is important and needs recognition as a know-it-all, and won't be succinct.
ConDor was pretty small this year - i think in part because it is the same weekend as WonderCon in SF. are these small cons a dying breed? in the SW roundtable discussion that i hosted (thanks again for helping me with talking points), whitney and i were the youngest people in the room. i think most younger generations either are more focused on specific franchises of fandom, or simply less into the literature (harry potter being an exception)

Younger fen are much more oriented toward pop culture. Look at Comic Con, one big fat orgy of pop culture. It draws over 100,000 people. Lit fandom has its own scene with its WorldCons and WesterCons and what have you. There's not as big a crowd into spinning filks about cats and computers.
The smaller, general interest relaxacons fulfilled a need in the days before the internet. Fen of the '60s-'80s used those conventions to meet like-minded people. It became so ingrained in their lifestyle, they still go to those types of cons even though they may also be online. Younger fans don't need these minicons to meet Harry Potter or LOTR or SW or anime fans. Another problem is money. It's expensive to put on even a small convention of a few hundred people. Fan-run, fan-oriented cons were once the norm but now only a handful still exist today.
