As they would say in SW fan fic, gods, I miss trick or treating! The last time I ever went trick or treating was my freshman year of college. My roomie, her friend, and I decided to put on some costumes and see what we could get. We went a little late as to not rip off the little kids of their candy. Actually, the folks who answered the door were more than happy to get rid of their remaining Jolly Ranchers, Tootsie Rolls, and Smarties. We had a pretty good haul.
There are certain candies you eat only around Halloween and rarely any other time of the year. For every unidentifiable confection, unwrapped and therefore forbidden candy, or (bleah) black licorice you got, there were lots of candies I couldn't wait to consume. Here are my all-time trick or treat faves:
Chocolate
The Gold Standard in treats, getting any kind of chocolate mini bar was like winning the lottery. You knew the folks giving them out have class because usually brand name chocolate bars are more expensive than say, generic candy corn. I don't care if it's a Reese's peanut butter cup, Hershey's, Twix, Almond Joy, Snickers, Three Musketeers, or the highly-coveted Kit-Kat, they're all good. Even though it's not in bar form, M&Ms were great to get too.
Pixie Stix
Do you know why they call it Pixie Stix? It's because they can't sell a candy called Cocaine For Children. The tubes of flavored sugar provided euphoric highs that must've annoyed many a parent.
Smarties/Sweet-Tarts
I love those little fruity sugar pills. Smarties were sweet, Sweet-Tarts had a little more tang to them.
Gummies
Imported from Europe in the 1980s, Gummy Bears became the it candy back in the day, followed by other gummy creatures and Swedish Fish.
Red licorice
I HATE black licorice but I love, love, LOVE red licorice. Yum!
Tootsie/Blo-Pops
How many of you tried to see how many licks it took to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?
Dum-Dums
Small lollipops that come in a variety of flavors, I still fish out a couple when I pour them into a trick or treat bowl.
Pop Rocks
The explosive candy that spawned an urban legend.
Good & Fruity
I didn't like the licorice flavored Good & Plenty but I really liked the Good & Fruity candy. Except for the black licorice pieces. Fine, go ahead and call me a racist.
York Peppermint Pattie
Okay, so maybe it falls into the chocolate category, but in my mind it's a mint that just happens to have a slathering of chocolate around it. Chocolate + mint = love!
Milk Duds/Whoppers
You haven't lived until you've mixed Milk Duds in hot popcorn. Messy as hell but it's delicious! Don't try it with Whoppers though.
Tootsie Roll
Ah, the venerable Tootsie Roll, that chewy piece of caramel goodness.
If you'll excuse me, I have to pre-inspect the candy I'm giving out tomorrow. You know, for quality.
