First Shia LeBeouf spills the beans yesterday, now Frank Marshall confirms it today with EmpireOnline: they are working on an Indy V script right as we speak. No word on when they hope to have this thing done but they better not take another 19 years! We have a Grampy Jones as it is :O.

Who should be Indy's next nemesis, besides time? We've already done Russkies and space aliens. In the Making of Indiana Jones book, one idea George Lucas toyed with repeatedly but never used was the idea of a haunted house and having Indy play ghostbuster. With the popularity of all things paranormal these days, why not go for it? Maybe he can battle vampires or something. Everybody likes vampires. What do you all think?

I like the haunted house idea. Indiana Jones Meets Dracula would be cool, but I think they did something like that in one of the Young Indy episodes. I'll have to thumb through the DVD collection to check.

The Young Indy Chronicles had an episode set in Transylvania, which was collected in "Masks of Evil". Basically, Jones, as an intel agent, is sent to find out what has happened to several allied spies in Transylvania as they tried to spy on a Romanian general, who fashions himself to be like Dracula. Indy and his companions find that things are a little more supernatural than they initially seem, but in the end, General Targo is stopped, with a stake in the heart at a crossroads.

it is one of the few times in the young indy adventures that deals with the supernatural realm, even though the adult indy films all deal with things beyond the normal.

That must've been one of the episodes I missed due to Ross Perot's infomercials.

I will NOT watch an Indy movie where Indy fights vampires. GOOD GRIEF.

I prefer the religious relics, so if there's another religious angle available, I'd rather they go with that.

(I was kidding about the vampires.)

I think Indy could go looking for the Spear of Destiny. That would be cool.

Yeah, the Spear of Destiny would be good. That's the spear that Jesus's Roman executioners used to stab him in the side when he was on the cross, right?

From: [identity profile] lazypadawan.livejournal.com
Yup. There actually was an Indiana Jones comics story arc in the 1990s where he was searching for the Spear of Destiny.

this is one of the issues of making a new Indy film is that quite a few of the more well known relics and artifacts and mysteries of the world have already been done in the Indyverse:
* The Spear of Destiny
* Atlantis
* Philosopher's Stone
* Scrolls of Buddha
* Stonehenge
* Shangri-La
* Golden Fleece
* Zombies (although they might come up again)
* even the Crystal Skulls appeared in the Indy EU before Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

in the Indyverse, the Spear of Destiny was interwoven with the Spear of Lugh from Celtic mythology.

But TNT did that in "The Librarian" just a couple years ago, so I'd doubt they would go that route.

Too bad he went after Noah's Ark in one of the novels, THAT would be a good one.

Indy the Vampire Slayer? Bleah. Anyway, vampires are everywhere already. We don't need another stinkin' vampire story.

Well, they used Nazis as the baddies for two of the movies; no reason why they can't use the Russkies for Indy V.

And yes, they ought to get a move-on. Ford turns 67 next month.

I would definitely pay to see a father-son adventure with Indy and Mutt ala Last Crusade. It would be fun to see them coming to terms with their relationship. And, of course, Marion is going to have to show up to rescue her men at some point :)

Indy is all about the locales, so an Egyptian themed one could be quite cool. I know they've already done that in the Indy spin off materials, but it would be new for the casual moviegoer. Otherwise, there's a whole Earth full of countries they haven't yet visited. China ... the Pacific Islands ... Australia ... all have interesting archaeological histories.

No. Mutt Williams is my favorite role that he has ever been in. I'm just waiting for Spielberg to stop promoting the guy and let him continue with his career, on his own.

Shia can do his part by putting down the sauce :P. And the TMI interviews...

All kidding aside, I didn't mind him at all in Indy IV.

With apologies to any and all who balked at the Sci-Fi based McGuffin of 'Crystal Skull', I think the 1950's setting calls for such a thing to be repeated.

Sci-Fi B-movies were the 50's equivalent of the Adventure serials of the 30's. There's a reason 'Raiders' was originally set in 1936. That's the era when those sorts of stories were told. If Indy's living in the fifties now, then the story genre has to reflect that.

That being said, Indiana Jones is an archeologist. How do you deal in Sci-Fi concepts but still have it tie to antiquity?

I've been thinking about time travel ever since Indy IV came out. An ancient relic, that is in actuality a bafflingly sophisticated piece of future tech. Part of a time machine in point of fact. Lost in the distant past, the result of a tragic accident, it has become the obsession of a fanatical ner-do-well who intends to harness its power and bend it to his dastardly ends. That is until he runs afoul of Doctor Henry 'Indiana' Jones Jr.

In true Indy style the villain would be destroyed by that which He/She covets, becoming essentially unstuck in time, existing in all points at once when they attempt to operate a technology far beyond their understanding. The villain's mind, unprepared for the sensory onslaught, would shatter and bleed causing death or severe brain damage. Which ever feels more appropriate.

Perhaps they're from THE FUTURE!!!!

Absolute bunkum obviously, but I really think there's a bloody good Indy flick in something like this...

I've been thinking a bit about another take on "1950s sci-fi" myself, although my thoughts were running a bit more like "after flying saucers, what else did movies feature then... giant monsters!" The problem is that I'm aware that Steven Spielberg was resistant to do "aliens again," and he might be just as resistant to do "dinosaurs again..."

Another unused idea in "The Making of Indiana Jones" was the "Monkey King" legend. I suppose, though, that I usually try not to speculate too much, the better to not wind up judging against those airy speculations...

They already have a LucasArts videogame based on the Monkey King, don't they?

I'm not completely familiar with the Indiana Jones videogames, but for some reason my automatic reaction to your question was to think of the "Monkey Island" adventure games... which are not based on the legend, so far as I know. "The Monkey King" has a connection with China, and "Monkey Island" involves pirates, ghosts, and zombies...

I loved the 1950s sci-fi setting myself. If they move the timeline even more, we'll have Indy going into the 60s and the Cuban Missile Crisis. I have no idea what the next McGuffin could be but I wouldn't mind a return to the supernatural, my love of 50s sci-fi aside.
