Examination Day

Rated G
Starring: A really young Padmé Naberrie

The little girl stood in the center of the room, trying not to fidget nervously. She prayed that the twelve adults seated in a semi-circle in front of her couldn't hear her heart pounding. It was practically the first time in her eight years of life she was alone with strangers. Yes, her mother waited in the antechamber, but she may as well be halfway across the galaxy.

Padmé Naberrie had never seen a room so big and ornate before. It looked like a temple, only nicer than any of the ones she'd seen. It made her feel even smaller. But she knew she couldn't be distracted. She'd been told by her parents and her teachers the importance of paying attention to what the grownups were saying.

There were six men and six women, all of them almost old enough to be her grandparents. They represented the different educational ministries of Naboo: science, mathematics, arts, trades, politics, and so forth. The way they were dressed--in rich silks and velvets--and the way they carried themselves was so different from the people she had known in the mountain village of her birth. Padmé wore her school uniform, and her chestnut curly hair hung loose down her back.

The minister of political science, a silver-haired woman, spoke first after the introductions. "Padmé Naberrie, we have summoned you here to Theed after we received your test scores. They're extraordinary. But we need to test you further."

Thus began a battery of questions from the panel that were part interview, part oral examination. She spoke about the books she liked, her work with her father assisting refugees, what she knew about Naboo's system of government, her favorite artists and musicians, and her favorite styles of dance. Because her dance instructors had also sent in recommendations, she had to change and perform the Awakening of Spring dance from The Little Butterfly, a popular juvenile ballet.

At the end of it all, they thanked her and said nothing more to her, though she'd seen them whisper among themselves and make notes on their datapads.

Even years later, Padmé recalled the utter relief she'd felt when she could leave the room and find safety in her mother's arms. She was an eight-year-old girl all over again. But little did she know, those days were about to come to an end.

No, not too many of those around. I figured it would parallel what Anakin went through with the Jedi in TPM, only her encounter went a lot better than his.
