David Prowse has repeatedly bitched about Lucas, ROTJ, the prequels, Hayden Christensen, and so on to anyone who would listen. In 1998 he accused Lucas of "reverse racism" because he chose James Earl Jones to provide the voice of Darth Vader instead of letting Prowse be the voice. Prowse even said that the only reason Lucas chose Jones was because Jones was black, and he wanted to fend off accusations of racism since the rest of the cast was white. That's patently ridiculous...Lucas chose Jones because his voice was genuinely intimidating, and Prowse's was not. Prowse thinks he could have voiced Vader, but he was wrong...he had a voice that was so not-ominous that the rest of the cast called him Darth Farmer behind his back.

Prowse was in a "fan film" in which SW "fans," who are "outraged by Episodes I and II, enlist Prowse, playing himself, to kidnap Lucas (played by a lookalike) and force him to make the then-forthcoming Episode III "more in the style of the OT."

Prowse said, while promoting the aforementioned bit of crap, that Lucas "had" to choose him to play Vader in Episode III. He said that he was the only one who could don Vader's suit. Never mind that Bob Anderson had played Vader during the lightsaber duels in ESB and ROTJ because Prowse couldn't duel worth beans -- Prowse never brings that up, and in fact, signs pictures "David Prowse IS Darth Vader," ignoring and disrespecting all the other actors who brought the character to life. Anyway, he claimed that Hayden Christensen is 5'9" and too skinny to don the suit, and sneered that Lucas would have to use "fancy digital effects" to make him believable.

Hayden Christensen is 6'1", not 5'9" (a fact pretty easily verifiable, though of course the nimrod who interviewed Prowse didn't bother to do so -- nor did he point out that Bob Anderson was the same height as Hayden and no one knew that he played Dueling!Vader until Mark Hamill revealed it), and while he is normally skinny, Lucas ordered him to work out and bulk up in preparation for Episode III, which he did. Many photos and screen stills of buff Hayden made the rounds, and caused much squeeing. Ultimately, some padding and lifts were necessary when he wore the suit, but even Prowse himself used padding and lifts when he donned the suit for the OT.

Besides which, Prowse has one leg shorter than the other due to a hip replacement (I think), and also a back brace. What made him think he would be SO much more convincing in the suit than Hayden? Nonetheless, he kept sniping at Lucas, saying that if Lucas "was honorable," he'd let him don the suit. He then said that Episode III's box office numbers would suffer if Lucas didn't let him don the suit, because "all his fans" would boycott it.

So, you tell me...how DID he do anything wrong, that he should be dis-invited to a Celebration?

I just don't care for the man, and I'm not sorry to see him be dis-invited from CV.

The first thing I've ever heard about Mr. Prowse was that he wasn't told about the big 'father' revelation in TESB, because he had big mouth and was leaking information from the set even when he was repeatedly asked not to do so. Then in some highly disturbing radio (?) interview, the guy who was asking questions was also making incredibly insultive remarks about Lucas (one including "L. needs to take his 'co*k' out of P. a**") and David Prowse was laughingly agreeging with him... and still arrogantly stating "Lucas has to hire me to play Vader in Ep.III."

I don't know who "P." is, but that radio interview sounds like a doozy. Such a classy comment from the interviewer, and such classiness from Prowse, laughing and agreeing with him. The more so because he still said Lucas should let him don the Vader suit in Episode III. "Hey, Lucas, I hate you and think your prequels suck, but you'd better let me play Vader in the final one!"

Yeah, I heard about him being kept in the dark about Vader being Luke's father in ESB. Kersh was instructed not to tell him, because of his "big mouth," as you said, so when directing the scene he told Prowse to "look angry."

In fact, I think that the only people who knew about the father revelation were Lucas, Kersh, James Earl Jones (of course, since he spoke the line), and Mark Hamill...and IIRC Hamill was given the information immediately before the scene was filmed. Lawrence Kasdan probably knew too since he wrote the script.

David Prowse. A legend in his own mind.

I remember reading an editorial on TF.N about a decade ago (pro-SW, amazingly enough) responding to Prowse's comments that people would be upset not to have him back as Vader. The editorial rightly noted that Prowse should be grateful to be apart of something that still makes him money years later. They noted the case of Jeremy "Boba Fett" Bulloch. They noted that Bulloch (think I'm spelling his name wrong) was not the voice of the character and freely admits that it was armor/mystique of Fett that made the character so popular but that he's happy to be apart of SW. He's still on good enough terms with GL and LFL that he even got a speaking cameo in ROTS.

If only GL and LFL would disinvite Entertainment Weekly permanently. I think that's only a use-use relationship now.

Bulloch played an Imperial guard in ESB as well as Boba Fett. He didn't, as you said, provide Boba Fett's voice, but then even THAT voice has been replaced by that of Jay L...I'm not even going to TRY to spell his name ;-p who played Jango in AOTC. I guess TPTB reasoned that he'd sound like Jango when he was grown up, since Boba was actually the clone, not the son, of Jango.

Bulloch has been very gracious and grateful to Lucas and LFL, and regularly appears not just at Celebrations and sci-fi cons and the like, but he's a fixture at SW Weekends. He got a physical cameo someplace in AOTC, I think, and the voice cameo in ROTS that you mentioned.

Had Prowse followed Bulloch's lead, he probably still wouldn't have been able to wear Vader's suit in Episode III, due to the physical impairments I listed in a previous post, but Lucas very well may have invited him to the set, to maybe coach Hayden on walking and gesturing while in the suit, and he may have gotten a cameo or two himself.

Instead, Prowse chose to slam Lucas and bitch and moan nonstop for decades, lending his warped perspective to any bedwetter who was willing to listen (and too lazy to check readily available facts). I don't know how he can possibly be surprised that he's been dis-invited to Celebration V, or that Lucas didn't let him play Suited!Vader in Episode III as he requested...heck, demanded, and expected. He reminds me of a particularly nasty girl I knew in sixth grade, who picked on me mercilessly, but then actually had the gall to be offended when I didn't invite her to my birthday party that year. Just like lazypadawan, I'm only surprised it took LFL this long to declare him persona non grata.

I wish they'd ban EWeakly too, but I guess it's "too popular" an entertainment rag to do away with. Though...didn't Lucas refuse to give them a cover-story interview for ROTS as he had for TPM and AOTC? Myself, I ended my subscription in 2002, not just out of disgust for their prequel-bashing, and indeed, their bashing of All The Star Wars Films That Aren't ESB, but out of disgust for their biased and factually inaccurate accounting of "X-Files" after David Duchovny announced he was departing the show and Mulder was replaced by Poochie, aka Doggett.

The way D.Prowse have been acting, you might think he's not the only one who played Vader, but actually created the character - came & put all the ideas in Lucas head...

Indeed...Prowse conveniently forgets that James Earl Jones provided the voice (and unlike Prowse, he is very humble about his contribution; he even told Lucas he didn't think he deserved a mention in the credits) and Bob Anderson played him during the duels in ESB and ROTJ. Heck, Ben Burtt provided the famous breathing sounds.

Prowse was deeply offended that Lucas didn't let him play the unmasked, dying Anakin in ROTJ. I think that's when the worst of the bad blood between them started. In any case, I agree, his dis-invitation is long overdue. Of course, he'll turn it into more fodder for his fans, whomever and wherever they are, to hate on big bad Lucas for cheating him AGAIN.

Excuse me while I snicker at the idea of "big bad Lucas." The guy I see in interviews and such is anything but big and bad.

Some twerp on TheForce.net (where else?) said, by way of showing what a great guy Prowse is, that he personally contacted James Earl Jones to tell him that there were no hard feelings. Wow, I'm deeply impressed, especially since Mr. Jones didn't do anything to Prowse that would engender hard feelings.

Sebastian Shaw just looked... kind. I don't know if that was the reason why he was hired, but I always assumed as much. Vader's hideous mask hiding Anakin's kind, gentle face... I don't even think Prowse would work as Anakin - he looked too rough.
