Yup, lazypadawan is joining in on the protest against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) by not updating tomorrow, 1/18/12. The Star Wars Prequel Appreciation Society will be blacked out 8 a.m.-8 p.m. EST. SOPA is the House version, PIPA is the evil brainchild of the Senate. SOPA has been sort of put on hold for now, while PIPA is still on the table.

While the bills are meant to fight piracy of intellectual property, especially out of Asia, they also threaten free speech and could result in lawsuits or even criminal charges against third-party providers. What do think that will do to LiveJournal letting you post fan fiction or using photos for icons? Or ISPs that support your fannish blog/website?

These bills suck so bad, opposition crosses ideological/partisan lines (unfortunately the said could be same for the Congress critters who support it...bleah). I support the right to protect intellectual property but this is overreach big time.

Kill the bills!
