There have been rumblings on various expanded universe message boards and blogs that Del-Rey and Lucas Books will soon announce its first ever official slash novel.
Sadly for you Anakin/Obi-Wan fans, it won't star your favorite hunks. In fact, Obi-Wan won't be in it at all. Instead, it will be the back story of the two gay Mandalorians Karen Traviss introduced in her "Legacy of the Force" novels. Basically the Mando version of Brokeback Mountain, the warriors meet during the waning days of the Empire while serving as mercenaries. According to the rumors, the two mercs are engaged to Mandalorianettes until the fateful day they have to go undercover in a gay bar as a part of their mission. The mercs get rip roaring drunk and wake up in each others' arms the next morning. The rest of the novel will supposedly be about winning acceptance for their lifestyle from their fellow warriors and making plans to attend the first ever Galactic Pride Festival. There will allegedly be lots of angst, injuries, and Man-do love. There might even be some m-preg action!
There's no title yet, but a fan with connections to Del Rey says they're already planning to do tie-ins with LGBT bookstores and even make the SW logo prominent on all books in a nice pretty rainbow pattern.
Why are they doing this? I guess they figure with the piles of slashy fan fic on the internet already, why not cash in? It will also boost Lucasfilm's p.c. bonafides, though I imagine some fans may not be happy with this new direction. I don't know what to think myself.
Interestingly, the identity of the author is somewhat of a mystery. Some say it won't be Karen Traviss but an old school Kirk/Spock Trek fan fic writer gone pro, who may (depending on the success of the new Trek film) be asked to write an official K/S novel as well!
More information as the story develops!
