Heh. Actually, as far as HP goes, there's a fairly well-known HP author who is trying to sell her fics too. (FTR, I couldn't get past the first few chapters of the first fic in question - 15 year old Harry and friends shagging like crazy every chapter. *shudder*) It's been brought up on F_W in the comments on the entry about the crazy SW fic chick, and people are actually defending the HP author by saying it's no different than putting out a zine... except these fics are going for $60-80 apiece! (Granted I'm no 'zine publisher, but somehow I doubt it takes THAT much per issue to just 'set off' the cost of printing.) Though at least she has the sense to not post it on Amazon, I guess.
I published zines for years and I can tell you this chick is either getting ripped off at her printer's or she is making a few buckaroos off her zines, which she cannot do. I can see a 400 page zine running $50. A 250-300 page zine with color art on the cover and good binding can be about $30-35. But $80??? No way.
Well - long story short, what I've seen of this woman's attitude in HP fandom makes me very much doubt she's a wide-eyed innocent. And her highly defensive replies on this matter make clear she doesn't see (or at least won't admit) what she's doing as the least bit shady.
Considering what I've read of the fic in question, $80 is what you'd have to pay me - hourly - to finish it. I wouldn't pay $80 for actual HP canon, let alone underage smut-o-rama.
I highly doubt it. They were published in the '50s. Copyright law has extended the period of exclusivity, but I'm sure the Tolkien estate has taken care of renewal. Nowadays, the author gets life + 70 years (it used to be life + 50, iirc), so public domain is more or less dead.
Okay, I just looked it up. Tolkien died in 1973, so based on copyright law at the time of publication, the copyright would not expire until 2023. I'm pretty sure the Estate could have gotten the 20 years that were added when the law changed, so that would make the expiration 2043. There's plenty of time for more stupid fanpeople to get themselves sued for copyright and trademark infringement!
